Dessert Watercolor Illustrations

Cracking open the plastic covering on a brand new Crayola Watercolor palette was so gratifying to a young Rachel Annalicia Saddler. The hard tabs of rainbow shined like a treasure. I recently rediscovered the allure of watercolors. I used watercolor pencils to create the illustrations of my first official launch of my #saddessertseries. The combination of pigment and water has a delightful effect on me. It's a great mix of excitement while still being a very soothing exercise. Does that make sense? I love watching the pigment disburse throughout the water. It's fascinating for me to watch the tiny drama that unfolds on the paper with paint.

I've painted my entire life, but I quickly gave it up when life became too distracting. I'm so out of practice compared to my early 20's when I was in art school. So, I now focus on creating space to explore painting and drawing. If I paint something that I don't like it, it doesn't matter. After I've finished, then I can do another one another time. I've become comfortable with the creative process. But I have to put in the effort to commit to creating again and again. I will ultimately get better—improving a little bit every single time.

Check out my work

Here are some illustrations that I posted on my @nosaddesserts Instagram account.

I expect that my skills will strengthen, and my work will become more of a personalized style. The first step is to create color areas with the watercolors. Once the water has dried, the next step is drawing lots of desserts on the different fields of pigments. The last part is the inking. MY FAVORITE! This skill is an excellent example of practice, practice, and more practice make a difference and feel more and more comfortable more often, I use it.

Over the years, I've fallen in love with the process, and I try to honor that by not putting pressure on my first draft but committed to doing a hundred drafts.

it's better to find the joy in the growing.

Check out my process video of how I make the illustration above. Leave me a comment and let me know what you think about my process. (I’d appreciate some encouragement. Thank you)
