RAINY DAY ROLLS, PICK-UP

Knead Bakehouse & Provisions is a favorite Saturday morning destination for Justin and I. Our first visit to the bakehouse was about two years ago, and we’ve continued to stop by every few months for a morning pastry and hot tea or coffee. By far, Justin’s favorite menu item is their Cinnamon Roll. It’s delicious.

Several weekends ago, long before the pandemic hit our shores, Justin went to Knead whilst I was out having a coffeehouse date with a friend. When he arrived at the Hampton Avenue shop, the small parking lot was packed, and there was no available seating outside. As he approached the entrance, he noticed that all of the inside seating was occupied as well, but the ‘order here’ line was empty. His air of optimism quickly deflated as soon as he looked at the restaurant’s remaining offerings on the display counter. The cinnamon rolls were no more.

BUT ON THIS RAINY DAY, WE GOT THE CINNAMON ROLLS!

Knead has worked hard, I’m sure, to reorganize the store’s functioning to remain up during this pandemic. Justin looked into it, and he found out that the store posts its weekend menu at 5 pm on Friday, and costumers can pick up their online order the following Saturday morning. We were glad that the online order would reserve two cinnamon rolls for us, but we still had to wait a few weeks before we could place our order. One week the rolls weren’t on the menu. Another week we had a 9 am-12 pm virtual homebuyer workshop scheduled, and we wouldn’t have been able to make it to the shop for breakfast.

But today, we finally got the cinnamon rolls!

But the story doesn’t end there. After settling in back at the apartment, I put both rolls in the convection oven because I love a warm pastry. Regretfully, I forgot to check the temperate, and within 5 minutes, all the icing melted and the buns got a little charred on the tops. I felt horrible for Justin; he’d been waiting weeks for this moment, Ugh! I felt bad. Later that afternoon, I told my seven-year-old niece about my reheating mishap. She quickly reminded me of a significant fact. “…you see, Auntie Rachel, the thing about cinnamon rolls is that they are always going to taste good.” She was right, we ate the slightly, more brown desserts, and they were still delicious.
